Spring is here!

I was beginning to wonder if we were going to get a spring this year!  I have been patiently waiting for my new daffodils to bloom.  I ordered a ton of Double Duo

and Kedron

from Breck's last fall and was pleasantly surprised to find that most of them popped up.  I always get nervous ordering anything online or in a catalog.  I also planted some muscari under a sweet gum, and they are just adorable.

I knew they were small, but had no clue just how tiny they were!  I was still excited to see these little blue guys popping their heads up after such a long, cold winter.

One of my favorite potted plants isn't a plant at all...it's a tree!  This is an impulse purchase from the big orange box last spring: a Bonfire Patio Peach Tree (Prunus Persica Durazo 'Bonfire Patio')

The first of many clear pink flowers appeared on my patio peach tree this week.  Come summer time it will look like a dwarf palm tree with a canopy full of dark magenta leaves that slowly fade to green with age.  The peaches are edible but not very tasty.  The Bonfire Patio Peach Tree is hardy in zones 5-8 and will grow up to 5 feet tall in five years.

A few years ago I picked up some monkey grass and periwinkle that a customer had removed from her garden and planted it in my front flower bed.  I knew I was asking for hard work keeping it in check but I'm trying to go for a cottage garden look.  I love the jumbled look of plants huddled in close together and spilling over top of each other.

Now that the ground cover seems to be taking care of itself, I'm looking for a few taller specimens to mingle with the white asiatic lillies.  Usually my bare spots are filled in with annuals but it can be rather costly, so my focus this season is to find more perennials.  Any suggestions?  I'd prefer something that is less than 3 feet tall/wide and either white, blue, or purple.  This area gets full sun.

Until next time,
